Lerato’s Hope

Lerato, whose name means ‘love’, is the inspiration behind Lerato’s Hope. She is living proof of the fact that with love, nurture and anti-retrovirals, an HIV positive person can live a happy and fulfilled life. Lerato continues to enjoy a good quality of life, and has become an integral part of our community.

Leratos Hope, founded and based in 2002 in suburban Pinelands, Cape Town, South Africa, is a Christian NGO which builds meaningful partnerships with existing grass roots organisations who care, treat, support and empower poor families affected by HIV and AIDS in the Cape Town areas of Gugulethu, Nyanga, Crossroads and Philippi.

Lerato’s Hope sources and receives many donations of clothes, stationary, educational toys as well as household items like chairs, tables, carpets and kitchen ware from people within our community and distributes them to those in need.

We also run food drives to collect food items to pack into food parcels for our partner organisations, which is vital for their ministries to function effectively.

Lerato’s Hope has established an excellent base of Volunteers including local schools and the community.

We meet with local schools to sensitize them to the needs of the broader community and encourage them to adopt a project that can help them impact those in need Form part of our school community.

A volunteer team assists with the sorting of collected food, clothing and other resources for distribution to our partner organisations.

Currently Lerato’s Hope supports two main organisations, namely

Abahlobo Crèche – an Early Childhood Development Centre in Barcelona township. Abahlobo crèche has started out of the home of a compassionate lady, Nomahomba Sixoka affectionately known as Mama Beauty, and she provides two meals per day as well as early childhood development for 35-70 children between the ages of 0-6 years old.

Beautiful Gate – situated in Crossroads, provides care and support to vulnerable children, while strengthening the capacity of families within the community to care for their own and other children while providing a paediatric and adolescent HIV clinic service to some 500 local children. Our main goal is to ensure children and teens are able to access quality HIV services and grow up being able to accept and manage their disease to live a long and meaningful life.
